The Impact of Social Media on Self-Image and Mental Health

In today’s world social media has become one of the strongest influences on how young people view themselves. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube often promote unrealistic beauty and fitness standards, leading to growing struggles with body image and self-esteem.

For young women, constant exposure to filtered photos and beauty trends can create pressure to look “perfect.” For young men, social media often sends the message that being a man means being big, strong, and muscular. Many feel pushed into excessive workout routines or even steroid use to achieve that look, which can harm both physical and emotional health.

In therapy, we focus on rebuilding self-love and body acceptance. Together, we explore how comparison and unrealistic online images can distort self-worth. We work to help you appreciate your natural features and understand that what you see online is often filtered, staged, and far from reality.

There is no such thing as a “perfect” body we are all human, and beauty exists in every shape and size. Through therapy, you can learn to look in the mirror and say with confidence,

“I am enough just as I am.”
